The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre (SLIC), a registered NGO, was officially launched on February 27th 2005
Today, it has become a vibrant community organastion, with a voluntary based board of Diretors, and one part time, temporary, paid memeber of staff. The Director meet monthly, and plan our growing number of projects.
My Name is Shari-Anne Gregoire and I work for The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre (S.L.I.C). This is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which was formed in 2005 to promote awareness of environmental issues. We focus on the use of simple technology to minimize the negative impacts on the environment and conserve natural resources..
My position as the SLIC Education Officer came about as a result of a project designed to educate the population on climate change issues. With funding from the British High Commission (BHC), this project enabled approximately 1000 Dominican children in some forty communities to be exposed to an introductory taster lesson on climate change. It began in October 2008 and officially ended in August 2009. I also instructed in composting and recycling.
The Ministry of Education and Local Government have been very keen in their support for this project and are also collaborating with our Alternative Energy project which is funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The vision of this project is to practically demonstrate that electricity can be produced by renewable means in a way that children could see and internalize. The project involves the installation of alternative energy equipment in 6 Primary Schools bordering National Parks around Dominica. I have ordered the equipment (3 wind turbines, 2 solar systems and soon to order a hydro system). Members of SLIC and the host community are involved in the installation process and I have co-ordinated 2 wind workshops so far and we will have the other workshops later this year.
We runmonthly workshops to teach people how to make and use the equipment and our membership is growing fast.
